Venue

The state-of-the-art Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium finds its home on the outskirts of Pune in Gahunje. This cricketing marvel, colloquially known as the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium, was officially inaugurated in 2012, with the honor of this auspicious occasion bestowed upon Sharad Pawar. Interestingly, the stadium’s construction was initially scheduled to conclude by 2010, but the project encountered delays, pushing its readiness for hosting cricket fixtures to 2012. It was initially intended to be prepared in time for the 2011 World Cup, but circumstances dictated otherwise.

In the days of yore, international matches in Pune were hosted at the Nehru Stadium. However, a contentious issue related to ticket distribution between the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) and the Pune Municipal Corporation prompted the MCA to take the momentous decision to construct a new cricketing ground. For a brief period, it bore the name of the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium. Nonetheless, as Sahara India Parivar was unable to fulfill its financial commitment regarding the ‘naming rights’ of the stadium, it underwent a transformation, once again becoming the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium.

The maiden international match gracing the hallowed turf of this stadium was a T20 International showdown between India and England in December 2012. The same year, the stadium made its foray into the Indian Premier League (IPL) arena, hosting its first IPL match, where the Pune Warriors India locked horns with Kings XI Punjab.

In conclusion, the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, despite its changing appellations, has become a vital hub for cricket in India, witnessing enthralling international clashes and becoming a part of the ever-popular IPL. Its journey reflects the ever-evolving landscape of cricket in Pune, and its future promises more memorable moments for cricket enthusiasts.
