Venue Description: Eden Gardens

Nestled in the heart of Kolkata, Eden Gardens stands as one of India’s most iconic sporting arenas, forever etched in the annals of cricket history. Its colossal capacity, once exceeding a hundred thousand, has since been trimmed to a still-impressive 66,000 following extensive renovations ahead of the 2011 World Cup.

Heralded as “Cricket’s answer to the Colosseum,” this colossal stadium has witnessed countless momentous clashes. The fervent Eden Gardens crowd exudes a profound love for the game. Notably, it hosted the inaugural World Cup final outside Lord’s. The thunderous applause greeted Anil Kumble’s remarkable 6/12 against West Indies during the final of the 1993 Hero Cup, an iconic moment etched into the hallowed turf.

Yet, Eden Gardens has also seen darker times. The infamous mob fury erupted when Sachin Tendulkar fell victim to a run-out during the Asian Test Championship match against Pakistan, ultimately leading to an eerily quiet stadium. A similar scenario unfolded in 1996 when India, struggling at 120/8, chased down 252 against Sri Lanka in a World Cup semi-final, sending the crowd into stunned silence.

Amidst these highs and lows, the stadium has witnessed glorious feats. The epic 376-run partnership between VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid during the 2001 Test series against Australia, culminating in a famous Indian victory, remains etched in cricket folklore. In November 2014, Rohit Sharma’s audacious 173-ball 264 against Sri Lanka added another glorious chapter to the stadium’s history.

The journey began with its first Test in 1934, hosting India versus England. However, it wasn’t until 1987 that the venue saw its maiden ODI, pitting India against Pakistan. While synonymous with cricket, Eden Gardens also once served as a football ground, hosting prominent derbies across the sprawling maidan.
