Rahul Dravid Coaching Contract Set for T20 World Cup of India Team

Rahul Dravid’s tenure as the head coach of the Indian cricket team has been extended until the conclusion of the Twenty20 World Cup, scheduled to take place from June 3 to June 30. The extension, effective immediately, will see Dravid accompanying the team to South Africa, with departure as early as December 5.

Sources familiar with the negotiations between Dravid and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have confirmed that the contract will undergo a review after the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the US. Rahul Dravid, initially a reluctant coach, required some convincing, but the extension was never in doubt following India’s impressive performance in the World Cup.

The BCCI has bought some time on the matter of extending other support staff members, with similar terms expected for now. While Rahul Dravid may not commit to an extension post the T20 World Cup, members of his support staff could be considered for further extension.

Rahul Dravid: Selection Committee Meeting Tomorrow

The selection committee is set to meet in Delhi on Thursday to finalize squads for the upcoming South Africa series, featuring three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests from December 10 to January 7. The current T20I side is likely to see most players retained, and players from the World Cup, with a few exceptions, are expected to be part of the ODIs side. There are speculations about Virat Kohli potentially skipping the ODIs, but sources close to him have denied suggestions of abandoning white-ball cricket indefinitely.

The leadership for the ODI side remains unclear, with uncertainty surrounding whether Rohit Sharma will lead, as there is a possibility that he might opt out. However, Rohit is expected to lead in the two Tests in India. The current captain, overseas at the moment, was unavailable for comment. The BCCI is set to revisit these decisions after the T20 World Cup, allowing flexibility in the team composition and leadership roles.
