The culmination of the WPL 2024 auction in Mumbai on Saturday marked the finalization of the five T20 cricket teams that will be fiercely competing for the coveted WPL 2024 trophy. Amidst the fervor, a total of 165 players, comprising 104 Indians and 61 foreign players, underwent the auction process. Contrary to expectations, prominent names like Chamari Athapaththu, Deandra Dottin, and Kim Garth experienced unexpected turns as they went without any takers in the WPL 2024 auction. In a stunning turn of events, relatively unknown players like Vrinda Dinesh and Kashvee Gautam emerged as headline-makers by fetching bids exceeding INR 1 crore.

Vrinda Dinesh, a talented batter from Karnataka, secured a jaw-dropping deal with the UP Warriorz, who acquired her for an impressive INR 1.3 crore. However, it was the all-rounder Kashvee Gautam who stole the spotlight during the auction. The Gujarat Giants secured her services for an astonishing INR 2.00 crore, making her the joint-most expensive player alongside Australian international Annabel Sutherland, who found a spot in the Delhi Capitals squad.

Kashvee Gautam’s remarkable deal not only established her as a headline act but also etched her name in history as the most expensive uncapped player in the annals of WPL. The auction also witnessed South African speedster Shabnim Ismail securing a significant deal with the reigning champions Mumbai Indians for INR 1.20 crore. Additionally, Australian all-rounder Phoebe Litchfield joined the Gujarat Giants after fetching a notable bid of INR 1 crore.

These substantial deals underscore the growing recognition and value of women’s cricket, with uncapped players challenging established stars for attention and remuneration.
